Photo-eye sensors sit about six inches off the floor on each side of the opening, shooting an invisible beam across the doorway. Break the beam while the door closes, and the door reverses — that’s the system that has protected kids and pets since it became mandatory on U.S. openers in 1993.

Try this two-minute check first

Before booking service, rule out the easy stuff:

  • Look at each sensor’s LED — typically one amber (sending) and one green (receiving). A dark or flickering green light means the beam isn’t landing.
  • Wipe both lenses — cobwebs, dust, and lawn-equipment splatter are prime offenders
  • Clear the beam path — bins, ladders, and leaf piles count
  • Check for sun blindness — low direct sun can overwhelm a receiver; shade it with your hand and try again (pros fix this permanently with sun shields or by swapping sender/receiver sides)
  • Gently nudge each bracket level — vibration and stray kicks knock them out of alignment; adjust until the receiving LED glows steady

When it’s a real repair

If the LEDs won’t light at all, flicker despite alignment, or the door still refuses to close with a verified beam, the fault moves up the wire: staples cutting into the low-voltage cable, wire breaks at the motor head terminals, water-corroded connections, or failed sensor units themselves.

Professional sensor replacement and alignment is one of the quickest, lightest service calls on the menu — sensors must match the opener brand’s system (myQ-era LiftMaster/Chamberlain eyes differ from Genie Safe-T-Beam, for example). Never bypass the sensors

Taping a sensor pair together facing each other makes the door close unconditionally — it also removes the only thing standing between a closing door and whatever is under it. The amber LED is the transmitter — it should always be lit. The green receiver LED is the one that dims or flickers when alignment is off. Steady green = beam locked.

Why does my door close fine in the morning but not in the afternoon?

That schedule is the sun. Low-angle sunlight flooding the receiver overwhelms the beam. Sun shields, repositioning, or swapping which side holds the receiver solves it permanently.

Are sensors universal across brands?

No. Each manufacturer’s eyes speak to their own logic boards. Universal retrofit kits exist for some legacy units, but matching the opener brand is the reliable path.
